Beer Blog: There’s a Tea in my Beer

August 20, 2011

MateVeza: Yerba Mate Gold

The Basics:

Brewed and bottled by MateVeza Brewing Company, Ukiah, California

Type: Ale

Alcohol Content: 5.0%

Repeat Consumption?: Maybe

Smurfiness: 7

Tried this one mainly out of curiosity; I first had Yerba Mate while in Argentina and seeing this beer I wanted to know if this traditional tea would work as a brewing component in a beer. It’s also an interesting thing to have a caffeinated beer. Yerba Mate Gold is relatively light, not so distinctive from other golden ales. There is a hint of the mate – a rustic and sometimes even pungent note in the beer, although (thankfully) it isn’t overpowering. Although the brewer states that each bottle is equivalent to a 1/2 cup of coffee in caffeine content, I didn’t perceive any great effect. My opinion on repeat consumption is that this beer is OK with food but if other alternatives are present I’d go another way. Your mileage may vary, yaddah yaddah yaddah.
